What Classical Homoeopathy Actually Is, and How It Differs From What Is Sold Over a Counter

Most of what is sold as homoeopathy in India is not what a classical homoeopath practises.

The short answer

Classical homoeopathy selects a single remedy for the whole person, based on the complete picture of how that individual experiences their illness and how they are generally. It differs fundamentally from the combination products sold over a counter, which pair a fixed mixture with a named disease. The distinction matters because it changes what the consultation is for, what the remedy is chosen against, and what can honestly be claimed.

This guide is education, not a diagnosis. It explains how classical homoeopathy generally thinks about this, and what is worth knowing before you decide anything. It cannot tell you what you have. If you are already under a doctor for this, please carry on with them. Homoeopathy is used here alongside conventional medical care, never instead of it.

Most people in India have encountered homoeopathy as a small bottle bought from a shop with a condition printed on the label. That product exists, it sells well, and it is not what a classical homoeopath does.

Explaining the difference is not a marketing distinction. It changes what happens in the room and what can honestly be promised.

The founding idea, stated plainly

Homoeopathy was developed by Samuel Hahnemann in Germany in the late eighteenth century, on the observation that substances producing a set of symptoms in a healthy person appeared to help a sick person presenting with a similar set. That principle, similars, is what the name means.

Two things follow from it that shape everything else. The remedy is matched to the pattern of symptoms rather than to the disease label, and the pattern includes how the individual experiences the illness rather than only the pathology.

Classical against what is usually sold

Two different things sharing a name
Classical prescribingOver the counter combinations
Chosen againstThe whole person and their symptom pictureA named disease on the label
Number of remediesOne at a timeOften several mixed together
Needs a consultationYes, and a long oneNo
Same product for everybodyNoYes
How progress is judgedHow the person is overallWhether the symptom went
Can be published as a listNoYes, which is why lists exist

That last row explains a great deal about what you find online. Combination products can be listed against conditions, which makes them easy to write about and easy to sell.

Classical prescribing cannot, which is why honest classical practitioners appear unhelpfully vague to somebody who wants a name.

What constitutional means

Constitutional prescribing means selecting a remedy for the whole person rather than for the presenting complaint alone. The word describes the totality: the physical complaints, the general characteristics such as temperature preference, thirst, sleep and appetite, and the mental and emotional picture including how somebody responds under pressure.

This is why a consultation about eczema spends time on sleep, and why a consultation about a cough asks how you are when you are unwell. It is not padding and it is not small talk.

It is the material the prescription is built from.

What this method can and cannot claim

Being straight about this is part of practising it properly. Homoeopathy is a contested field and the evidence base is genuinely disputed.

This clinic does not claim otherwise, and any practitioner telling you the debate is settled is not being accurate.

What is offered here is a careful, individualised assessment, treatment aimed at the whole person, honest review of whether anything has changed, and a clear statement when it has not. What is never offered is a cure, a guaranteed timeline, or a reason to stop conventional treatment.

Homoeopathy at this clinic is used alongside conventional medical care rather than instead of it. That is not a hedge.

It is a clinical position, and it is why every condition page here carries red flags telling people when to see a doctor instead.

Who this suits, and who it does not

It tends to suit people with long standing complaints that have been investigated, where nothing structural has been found, and where the same pattern keeps recurring. It suits people willing to answer a great many questions and to be reviewed honestly.

It does not suit somebody who wants a quick fix for an acute problem that conventional medicine handles well. It has nothing to offer an emergency.

And it is not the right choice for somebody looking for permission to stop treatment they have been prescribed, because that permission will not be given here.

What a good practitioner looks like

  • Takes a long history and asks about far more than your complaint.
  • Names no remedy before taking your case, including over the phone or on a website.
  • Asks for your reports and reads them.
  • Never asks you to stop prescribed medication, and says so without being asked.
  • Tells you when to see a doctor instead, and refers you when the picture calls for it.
  • Reviews honestly, and says when nothing has changed rather than extending.
  • Makes no promise of a cure, and does not sell you a package of visits in advance.

The blog on why a homoeopath asks about your sleep and your temper goes further into the questions, and the first visit page covers the practicalities.

Asked and answered

Common questions

What is classical homoeopathy?

It selects a single remedy for the whole person, based on the complete picture of how that individual experiences their illness and how they are generally, rather than matching a product to a disease label. That is why the consultation is long and why two people with the same diagnosis routinely receive different remedies.

How is it different from the homoeopathy sold in shops?

Over the counter products are usually fixed combinations paired with a named condition on the label, identical for everybody who buys them. Classical prescribing selects one remedy for one person after a full case history. Combination products can be listed against conditions, which is why lists exist online.

Why will a classical homoeopath not tell me a remedy name?

Because in this system the question does not have an answer until the person has been assessed. A remedy named without a case history is a guess, and publishing one against a condition would misrepresent how the method actually works.

Is homoeopathy proven?

The evidence base is genuinely contested and this clinic does not claim otherwise. Any practitioner telling you the debate is settled is not being accurate. What is offered here is careful individualised assessment, honest review, and a clear statement when nothing has changed.

Should I stop my other medicines if I see a homoeopath?

No, and no responsible practitioner will suggest it. Homoeopathy at this clinic is used alongside conventional medical care rather than instead of it, which is why every condition page carries red flags telling people when to see a doctor instead.
