Premature Greying: What Is Genetic and What Is Not
Most premature greying is inherited. A small and genuinely correctable share is not, and that share is worth finding.

Greying happens when the pigment producing cells in a follicle stop working, and in most people the timing is inherited. Greying is generally considered premature before about twenty in Indians. A minority of cases relate to correctable causes, most importantly vitamin B12 deficiency, thyroid disease and low iron, which is why those are worth testing. Once a hair has grown in white, no treatment turns that individual hair dark again.
Finding white hairs in your twenties is a small, specific kind of unhappiness, and it attracts an enormous amount of advice. Most of that advice promises reversal, and almost none of it distinguishes between the parts of this that can be influenced and the parts that cannot.
Why hair turns white
Colour comes from pigment cells sitting at the base of each follicle, which inject pigment into the hair as it grows. Over time these cells reduce in number and activity, and once a follicle has none left, every hair it produces afterwards grows without pigment.
Two consequences follow, and both are frequently misunderstood. Greying happens follicle by follicle rather than all at once, which is why it looks like a scattering that gradually fills in.
And because the pigment is added during growth, an existing white hair cannot be re-pigmented. Anything that genuinely helps can only affect hairs not yet grown.
The correctable causes, which are the useful part
This is where a consultation earns its place, because these are testable and some of them matter well beyond your hair.
- Vitamin B12 deficiency. The most important one in India, because B12 comes almost entirely from animal foods and long term vegetarian diets are extremely common here. It causes reversible premature greying in some people, and untreated it also causes nerve damage, which is the real reason to find it.
- Thyroid disease. Both underactive and overactive thyroid are associated with early greying, and both are treatable.
- Iron deficiency. Common, particularly in women, and worth checking as ferritin rather than haemoglobin alone.
- Smoking. Consistently associated with earlier greying, and unlike your genetics this one is within your control.
- Severe or prolonged nutritional restriction. Including very restrictive dieting.
- Copper and some other trace elements, which are involved in pigment production, though deficiency is uncommon on an ordinary diet.
If any of these is found and corrected, some people do see darker regrowth. That is the honest best case, and it applies to new hair only.
What about stress
There is reasonable and growing scientific interest in a link between severe stress and pigment loss, and it is no longer simply folklore. What is not supported is the everyday version, where ordinary work pressure is blamed for a process that is mostly following an inherited schedule.
The practical position is that stress may contribute in some people, that it is worth addressing for many better reasons than your hair, and that treating it as the sole explanation usually means a testable cause goes unfound.

Greying itself is harmless. These combinations point at something worth finding.
- Rapid greying over months rather than years.
- Greying alongside tiredness, breathlessness, tingling in the hands or feet, or a sore tongue, which suggests vitamin B12 deficiency.
- Greying with weight change, feeling cold, constipation or hair thinning, which suggests thyroid disease.
- Greying with white patches of skin, which needs a dermatology opinion.
- Greying in a child, which should always be assessed.
- Greying alongside hearing problems or a white forelock present from birth, which can indicate an inherited syndrome.
- Greying with any bald patches, since alopecia areata can spare white hairs and give a misleading impression of sudden greying.
What no treatment can do
This needs saying plainly because the market for grey hair reversal is large and largely dishonest. No oil, no supplement, no shampoo and no remedy re-pigments a hair that has already grown white.
The pigment is placed during growth and that hair is finished.
Anything that works at all can only influence follicles that are still producing pigment or have recently stopped, and it can only show up in new growth over months. So a product promising visible reversal in weeks is promising something the biology does not allow, whatever the photographs show.
Colouring your hair is a perfectly reasonable choice and nobody should be made to feel it is a failure. Contact allergy to hair dye is genuinely common though, so a patch test before each use is worth the two minutes, and that is covered in the blog on contact allergy.
Where classical homoeopathy fits
Honestly, in a narrow place, and it is better to say so than to overclaim on something so visible.
Where greying is following an inherited timetable, no approach changes that, and a practitioner promising otherwise is not being straight. Where there is a correctable cause, finding and correcting it is the work, and that is done with tests rather than remedies.
What constitutional case taking asks is the usual question: why this person, at this age, with this history, and what else are they carrying. Early greying alongside exhaustion, poor digestion, disturbed sleep or a demanding period of life is a picture rather than an isolated complaint, and treating the person is a reasonable thing to do even when nobody can promise the hair will darken.
Realistic expectation setting matters more here than in almost any other complaint. If a fair trial produces no change, that should be said.

Common questions
Can white hair turn black again?
An individual hair that has already grown in white will not re-pigment, because pigment is added during growth and that hair is finished. Where a correctable cause such as B12 deficiency or thyroid disease is found and treated, some people see darker new growth, but that applies only to hairs not yet grown.
Does plucking one grey hair cause more to grow?
No. Each follicle produces one hair and pulling it does not recruit neighbouring follicles. The myth persists because greying is spreading anyway and the timing gets blamed on the plucking. Repeated plucking over years does damage the follicle though, so it is still worth avoiding.
